When looking for the perfect backpack, there are three main things that you need to pay attention to. These include the duration of your backpacking trip, your body type and, your backpacking style. This is because these three factors are what influences the choice of your backpack.

DURATION OF THE TRIP:

Generally, if your trip is set during the cold weather, you’ll need a much bigger backpack unlike when the weather is warm. Since the size of a backpack is measured in liters, if your trip is bound to last for 1-3 nights, you’ll need a 35-50 liter backpack; if it’s a 3-5 nights trip, you’ll need one that’s 50-80 liters and is it’s an extended trip (one that lasts for over 5 nights), you’ll need a backpack that 70+ liters.

 YOUR BODY TYPE:

The next thing to pay attention to is your body type. As such, the backpack you choose should be able to complement your body. Doing so makes it possible for you to get one that is appropriate for your torso length and one that comfortably grips around your hips. Here are some of the things that have to be considered:

Your Torso Length: Finding a pack that is of the right length is easy as they are available in various sizes; from extra small to extra large. Others may also have an adjustable harness to enable you modify it so that it fits your torso.

Waist Size: At least 80% of the total backpack weight being carried is supported by the hips. This is why the packs are designed to accommodate different hip sizes. Just in case you aren’t able to find one that fits you well enough, you can opt for one that has interchangeable hip-belts.

 BACKPACKING STYLE:

When it comes to choosing a backpack that’s able to complement your style, you’ll need to specific of the kind of backpack you are in need of and how it’s able to meet your need and wants.

Women vs Youth Specific Backpacks:

Women specific backpacks are designed in such a way that they match a woman’s frame. For instance, they have narrower and shorter torso dimensions unlike those of the males. They therefore can be used by not only the women but also by the much younger male and females. On the other hand, youth specific backpacks are a little bit smaller than the men and women packs but, have adjustable suspension to help in accommodating the growth of a child.

Internal Frame: These are ideally the best packs in the market for they incorporate a load support technology that transfers most of the weight to one’s hips. Moreover, they help in keeping the carrier stable even when on an off-trail and uneven terrain.

External Frame: Despite these ones having different gear organization options and very good ventilation, they shouldn’t be used by people who are carrying heavy or irregular load.

Frameless Backpacks: These are perfect for people who like traveling light or those who don’t like the burden of heavy luggage when hiking.

 ADDITIONAL FEATURES TO LOOK FOR:

Lastly, you ought to make sure that backpack’s compartments are easy to access – have a side zipper to make it easier for you to reach things at the bottom of the pack, has a top lid where you can keep all of your essential items like sunscreen and snacks, a hydration reservoir, a number of pockets, good ventilation and is well padded among other things.

Thus, this can be used as a guide to help you find the most ideal backpack for your next backpacking trip.
